Amaru May (b. 1984)

I am a Mexican self-taught textile artist currently living in Singapore. In my work, I explore how identity and cultural background influence the way we perceive colours and patterns. Inspired by the vibrant hues and geometric designs found in traditional Latin American craft and architecture, I create hand-woven pieces using cotton and linen threads.

These woven compositions evoke reflection on how we accept or reject what we see—whether questioning a colour that feels too bright, or testing our tolerance for misalignment by intentionally leaving room for mistakes.

In my practice, I aim to create visual dialogues that embrace the tension between different yet interconnected worlds, seeking a balance between order and chaos within an imperfect hand.
